High voltage transformers are the backbone of electric grids; failure in just a few critical locations can cause grid collapse. Replacement lead time is 1-2 years; nearly all large transformers are manufactured in Europe and Asia. Vulnerabilities include solar storms, electromagnetic pulse, cyber-attack, and physical attack.
Our mission: Boost critical infrastructure resilience and recoverability.
All technologically-advanced societies rely on critical infrastructures—the electric grid, telecommunications, water supply and sanitation, to name just a few. Sustained interruption of electricity and interdependent infrastructures can result in wide-ranging economic, societal, and environmental impacts.
The Foundation for Resilient Societies has a ten-year track record of promoting practices that boost critical infrastructure resilience and recoverability. Our goal is to forestall societal collapse and preserve democratic institutions.
Our top priority is the U.S. electric grid and its supporting infrastructures. We apply our nationally recognized legal, technical, and financial expertise in practical ways before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and other regulatory bodies.
We have deep respect for the United States, its institutions, and its people. Within our societal systems, there are good incentives for day-to-day infrastructure reliability. However, it is our position that the profit incentive alone provides inadequate protection from disasters that occur infrequently and have consequences beyond the routine responsibilities of infrastructure operators.
Please take a bit more time to learn about Resilient Societies by visiting our Priorities, Initiatives, Research, and Leadership pages. Our detailed work on infrastructure protection can be accessed on our FERC, NRC, State Agencies, and NERC pages.
